I'd agree with J on this one....
Have a good look round the internet at other sites to get some inspiration. I like to have a regular look at the top companies in the UK to see what they're doing with their sites (along with a few other sites
)
There's nothing wrong with viewing the source and seeing how they've put their site together, although obviously copying any of it may breach copyright terms.
Work on a colour scheme before you start and see what colours work. Most of the time you'll want to work with shades of a base colour so that everything blends together nicely. Using contrasting colours makes for an unprofessional look. Think of it like decorating your house. Would you really have yellow walls and a black carpet (or vice versa)? If you're unsure, probably safer sticking to a mainly white background.
IMO, Times New Roman isn't a good font for websites. I've yet to see a site using that font that I didn't think looked unprofessional.
I'd also say that, IMO, 99 times out of 100, a site's make or break is it's imagery. A site with none/few images or those that use "standard" images don't look good. If a company doesn't have any library / PR pics then I'd suggest getting some professional pics done.
Those are just my opinions. Hope they help.
