Adjacent Cols & Rows in Matrix

    Hi Gurus,

How to achieve the adjacent cols and rows in the Matrix using the SSRS 2005?

I know that this option is available in SSRS 2008 but the requirement is to achieve the same with SSRS 2005. I have tried many ways but unable to get the required format i.e.

Product & Year at the same level in the cols of Matrix, they come with Parent-Child relationship but I need to display then on the same level (adjacent to each other) in the matrix.

Kindly share the trick/steps to achieve the same.

    Regards,
    ~Harish

    Hi Harish,

Do you have an example of what you are trying to achieve? You can add new column and row groups to a matrix as well as adding child columns & rows.

You might try adding a new group and see if that helps, but if not, you might consider using a table rather than a matrix if that meets your needs better.

    Dear Lumnarc,

Table does not seems to be meeting the requiement due to the dynamic nature of the dataset (results).

Pls. guide, how do I add the adjacent col / row group (not the parent-child nesting)? I did try to add the group by rightclicking on the table/col/row and it all adds it underneath of the existing col/rows, whereas I want to get the new col/row group available on the same level of the existing group.

    i.e.
I want to show the Zone on the col as well as the Years also on the same level.

    Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 3 (indefinite), Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 (indefinite)
Prod 1 xx xx xx xx xx xx
Prod 2 xx xx xx xx xx xx
Prod 3 xx xx xx xx xx xx
Prod 4 xx xx xx xx xx xx
    (indefinite)
Dealer1 xx xx xx xx xx xx
Dealer2 xx xx xx xx xx xx
Dealer3 xx xx xx xx xx xx
    (indefinite)

Now, when I try to add the col/rows as a new group it goes like:

    Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 3 (indefinite),
    Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 (indefinite)
Prod 1 Dealer1 xx xx xx
Prod 2 Dealer2 xx xx xx
Prod 3 Dealer3 xx xx xx
Prod 4 Dealer4 xx xx xx
    (indefinite)

I hope this gives you clear idea about the problem I am facing. Pls. suggest the way to resolve this.

    Regards,
    ~Harish

So if I get your example right, your zones and years need to be summarized by Prod and Dealer independently of each other. That is an interesting problem to be sure, and one that I have not yet tried to solve. I'll need to spend a bit of time looking at this before I can answer since it's not something I have encountered a need for before now.

The only thing I have done that is similar is to create a dynamic SQL query that returns the data in the desired format. It is resource intensive (at least the way I managed it), but if that is a viable stopgap measure to get you by until SSRS 2008 and you are relatively comfortable with SQL I can help with that.

Yes, you have got the example right.

Even though the same go more complex if I have to shown the State details under Zones and QTR details under Years.

Yeah, I know some SQL as well and can understand the query / design once you share the same to resolve the problem.

As far as my understanding and experience is concerned, I know the same is very much achiveable with BO XI, Cognos 8. Seems to be one of big features missing from SSRS 2005.

It will highly appricated, if would you pls. explore and come-up with some better solution rather than the SQL, as you have more experience and exposure in SSRS 2005 rather than me.

Once again Thanks a lot for being so prompt to my problems and queries.

I believe I have achieved a workaround, although it will require some testing. If you put two matrices directly next to each other, and summarize one by zones and another by years using the same dataset and sorting, you should be able to acheive what you want. I have an example attached (sorry it's so small, trying to conserve space), but I left the space between them to illustrate that there are two.

In fact, you can hide the column heading and row data in the second matrix if you wish by toggling the visibility to hidden for the two rightmost cells in the layout pane for the second matrix. I would show it at least initially so you can verify that this behaves as you like though.

My testing revealed that despite the variable number of columns, this approach works pretty well. Hopefully SSRS 2008 will have the capability to handle multi dimensional matrices in a more intuitive way.

Hopefully this works for a workaround though. Let me know if you need any help setting this up!

    Great Idea!!

That's what comes only with experience. I'll certainly work on this style and would let you know, if there would be any help required from your side.
