    CMS from scratch

Alright guys, here goes a pretty tall order to fill.

Basically I decided to finally put together a personal site, for now it's just a static page ht-design: your dreams are our playground, but I wanted to create a great well rounded portfolio site.

I have 2 major obstacles to get past though:

    1. I haven't picked up any PHP or SQL coding in almost a year, so I'll almost be relearning all of it.

    2. I wanted to create a CMS framework that can serve 2 purposes. Firstly to make it easy to update my site and most of it's contents and secondly to be a framwork that can work on any future sites I work on for either myself or my freelance clients.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good online tutorial or walkthrough that could help me sort things out in a way that I won't turn around a few months and say, "damn, I forgot that detail".

I also wanted to put a Twitter feed on the page. I know this all a huge order, but I will be forever greatful and if you ever need assistance in the Design areas... I can help

    Thanx in advance

Can't really comment on the PHP as I don't use it, but it depends how sure you are on building a CMS type system yourself.

You could just try using an Open Source CMS...Drupal, for example.

If you just want something simple that stores content for each page as html code in a database and allows you to update this content (ie not via a WYSIWYG editor) but the site layout etc. is static then that might be an easier option...

AFAIK a full on CMS solution is a pretty indepth and lengthy build process. Don't know if anyone here has had a go at building one.

If you want to go down the "simple" route, then for a simple refresh on PHP, you could try starting here, PHP Tutorial which will probably jog your memory on various elements...

Difficult to know how much PHP has stayed in your head and how much has gone...I think it's one of those things that once you get going on it, it'll start coming back to you...

Twitter should be pretty easy once you have the site. They provide a web service to access all the key features and functions and there are pre built solutions to help call all of these features.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanx for the reply Richyrich.

As far as building my own CMS I reckon I can do it with PHP, no problem. I wanted a tutorial though, because although it's almost the same as using an existing framework, it makes it easier for me to use it in the future, because I've picked it up and structured it from the ground up myself. The already built frameworks confuse me a little, probably due to inexperience, but I'm not sure how they're structered and where all the info is.

If I could get a good Joomla or other framework tutorial, that helped me to organise the ideas of how it's built that would be great.

In terms of PHP, I reckon I can pick it up again in no time
