    Shared folder issue

    Hi All,

I know this should be a pretty simple task...create a new folder on the server (windows2000) and grant group permissions to this folder.

I am in the group and 2 other people...well, 2 of us can access the folder but 1 can't. I've added that 1 user permissions outside of the group and in the group....but I'm not sure why this 1 user is having problems.

I wasn't the one that created the new folder (it's directly under the c: drive).....I think the person that did created it from his pc from a mapped drive instead of logging into the server to create it, could this be the issue?
Should the new folder always be created while on the server?

The user that can't access it is not getting an access denied folder.....the prompt getting is "check the spelling of the path"....weird....If checked it myself and typed it myself.....

    Any suggestions?

When creating shared folders, you have two sets of permissions: share permissions and NTFS permission. It's common to have less strict permissions set for the share permissions and finer tuning on the NTFS permission.

So, you could give the Everyone group Full Control via share permissions and lock it down a bit via NTFS. It would help to know how you have it setup, but since only one person is having a problem, it might be a totally different issue. Has this person tried accessing it from a different pc?

    Hi JMH,

All 3 of us have tried to access/map the folder to our own machines....that 1 person still doesn't recognize the folder/path when running from START/RUN. and when they try to map it, it prompts for username password info and it will not accept theirs. If I use mine to login on their machine it opens.

Both myself and the other person that it does work on...are both administrators on the server. The other person is not and I do not want that person to be an administrator.

Under properties on the security tab, I have added the group and that 1 user will Full Control checkboxes. I do not have the Everyone group on this tab.

Should I be doing it on the Shared tab?

    Thanks for your help!

Via the share permissions, give the Everyone group Full Control. Then via NTFS, add the necessary groups/people that you want to have access and grant them the permissions they need (i.e. Read, Write, Delete, etc.)

Then see if that 1 person can access it.

Are you guys logging on to a domain? If so, you will want to go to domain user and group policies under services, and set the 3rd person up as an administrator. Then on the server, set the share up for administrators. Browse the network, find the share, create a shortcut of the share.

If you aren't logging onto a domain, then make sure you guys are all part of the same workgroup. Allow full permissions. Then see if you can browse the network with each user to get to where the shared folder is. Instead of mapping it, create a shortcut to it.
