    Remote Desktop not Working

I have a real problem with Remote Desktop. Everytime I try and connect to my server (in remote location, not on same network) RD just brings up a VS JIT Debugger window saying "An unhandled win32 exception occurred in mstsc.exe" followed by some numbers in square brackets, which seem to be different each time ie they don't seem to relate to a specific error.

I then have the option of debugging in VS. If I click yes it opens up the Disassembly and fails on line:-
    Code:
4D86B2F5 mov ecx, dword ptr [eax]

The error box says "Unhandled Exception at 0x4d86b2f5 in mstsc.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000000"

The RD seems to keep running in the background but is being blocked by the Debugger.

I've tried looking up on google and it says about removing a KB925876 which isn't on my computer (I presume because it's SP3) or possibly a problem with .NET 3.0 / 3.5, both of which I've removed and still get the error.

There is no way of uninstalling Remote Desktop and reinstalling (It's not in Add / Remove programs or Windows Components)

Any ideas what I can do? I have no way of accessing my server now. I'm running version 6.0.6001.18000

I also now don't have the .NET 3.0 that was installed with VS or .NET 3.5 which means none of the apps I'm trying to test work either...Brilliant....

And if I try and do a repair on VS that gives an error as well...

    Well done Microsoft!!!

God I'm in a very, very bad mood today...

have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling RDP? Insert Windows XP CD, go to "Additional Tasks", "Install Remote Desktop", uncheck it to uninstall, then go through again and check it to install.

If you don't have CD, you can try this link: RDP Download

If that doesn't work, you might be able to find an older version of MSTSC.EXE in your service pack directories.

Going to try the CD and see if that does it.

What was the link Shannon, because it didn't go into the post correctly?

I did try downloading a couple of versions but when I tried to install them it just said I didn't need that update.

OK. When I tried the CD it did the same as when I downloaded the RD client.

The CD just had an option to Set up Remote Desktop. When I do that, it tried to install but then gives an error saying it can't install because the Operating System already has a built in version.

There seems to be no way of uninstalling it...

Luckily I have a RD client on my iPhone otherwise I'd be completely stuck...This is ridiculous...

Any ideas where I'd find the older versions of MSTSC? Just do a search in Explorer?

OK. I found the old version (5.1) in C:\i386 and that seems to work.

What a ridiculous thing to have to do...

    Thanks Shannon

Thing is, I'm sure it was working because it was pre-popped with the right IP address, so I must have used it.

Don't know when it suddenly decided to stop working though.

Just overwritten the new files with the old ones and all the shortcuts seem to be working again now.

    Cheers
