    Internet Problems

My laptop keeps on losing the ability to browse the internet at random times.

I have Windows XP Pro with Internet Explorer 6 (I like to run IE 6 on my laptop as I have IE 7 on my desktop). At random times it fails to load any internet pages even though I have a connection to my wireless router and my Exchange email is working fine. The IP address and gateway are also fine. The only thing it won't do is browse the internet.

I know the router and connection are OK because my desktop browses the internet fine (albeit through a wired connection) but assume the wireless must be fine also because my email still works.

I've tried repairing the wireless connection, rebooting the router and restarting several services but nothing brings the internet back other than rebooting the laptop.

It has all windows updates installed and I have also tried disabling my anti virus and firewall. I can't remember exactly when it started doing it, but probably within the last week or so. It's happened about 3 times since then. I've also tried browsing with FF and that doesn't work either, so it's not an IE issue.

Is there any service or something I can try to restart to kick it back into action rather than having to reboot the laptop each time?

I don't know what else to try...

Just looked in the Event Log and found this entry at 03:17:25 this morning:-
    Code:
TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts

However, it still worked at about 7.30am this morning. It went off sometime between then and now.

Ok. Just tried running the Network Diagnostic wizard and it said there was some problem with the winsock catalog and did I want it to reset it.

I said Yes. Only slight issue is I have to restart for repairs to take effect, so I won't know if this has solved the internet issue straight away.

OK. Looks like that hasn't sorted it. Still have internet just dropping off, but Outlook to exchange says it's connected and it says my Skype is still Online, so don't know what the issue is....

Any ideas? I wouldn't mind so much if I just had to restart a service or something, but the only way to fix it at the moment is to reboot the computer which takes about 30 mins after I've saved and shut everything down that's open....

I wish I could suggest something, rr, but you've done all the things that I might have thought of. The log entry (that was a good place to look!) about the limit of concurrent TCP/IP requests sounds suspiciously like it might be associated with the problem, but I don't know enough about that to know what to do. If you have the same problem with FF and IE, but not Skype and email, and not on your desktop, that would seem to isolate it to your laptop HTTP drivers. If the situation persists and nobody else has any info for you, it might mean you have a registry error or a TCP/IP stack problem and it might require reinstalling the OS or something ugly like that. Good luck.
