    installing security

I am installing user level security on database (access 2003) - I will be placing the database on local network before I build security on it.
    Question:
When I complete the security a short cut file ( i think mdw file is automatically placed on my desktop not on the network with the database) - can I copy that short cut back to the network and when I go to other users desktops - I can just drag shortcut from the network to their desktops.
    thank you,

    thank you,
Note: The User Level Security has been dropped in the new Access 2007/ACE database format. You might consider a different method that will be support by the newer versions of Access. My understanding is that it was dropped because it was not popular with most Access Developers.

Using the built in User Level Security can be difficult and usually requires lots of testing.

I would urge you to test on a copy of your database and document exactly how you implemented the security.

I normally place the back end database and the custom work group file (.mdw) on the server is a share. The front end is placed on each user's local machine.

Create a shout cut to start the front end using the work group file on the server. If Access has been installed into the same director on all workstations, then you can place a the shortcut on the server and copy it to each workstation.

What I use is this to deploy my front end is the: Auto FE Updater You can find a link to it on my site under the links for Access Developer Tools at [URL Removed: See forum rules]

HiTechCoach has given you some good guidance. I support all of his comments and if the documents he tried to provide are the ones I think they are, they are very useful. If HiTechCoach will PM me with the URLs, I will be glad to post them here.
