    Setting different folder permissions Fedora

We have a Fedora file server and I'm trying to work out how to set multiple permissions on different folders.

When you view folder permissions, you only get "Owner", "Group" and "Others" settings. How do you set one group to have read/write access, another group to have read access and everyone else to have no access?

On windows you just add multiple users / groups to a folder permission, but you don't seem to be able to do this with linux.

    Any ideas?

With Linux, you can only have one user owner and one user group owner. By default, Linux distributions usually do not use ACLs, but they are available. See here and scroll down to the section regarding ACLs: File attributes and permissions - Linux 101

So can that only be set by user or can you set by group as well?

    Something like :
    Code:
    setfacl -dm g:groupName:rwx <folder>

Yes, you can also use ACL's to assign multiple groups different permissions. They take on the same syntax as modifying users.

    That sounds ideal then!

Only thing that slightly concerns me is all this compiling / recompiling / mounting / remounting of the filesystem. Sounds like a recipe for disaster...

Perhaps for the inexperienced, (which includes me).

Hmmm...If it's not something you'd want to attempt, I'm not entirely sure I want to go there either...Will let the guy that put the system together know and see if he wants to go for it!

Actually, just for the learning experience, I would love to try it out if I had the time. Maybe try setting up Fedora on a virtual machine and test there?

    Ummm....How do you do that?

I have virtually zero knowledge of Linux / Fedora.. Apparently it's running Fedora Core 7 and might already have acl setup, so going to check in the config file when I have a chance...

Get software such as Virtual PC from Microsoft, install it on Windows, and it will allow you to install pretty much any operating system you choose. This actually has nothing to do with Linux...all can be done on Windows for testing purposes.
