Thread: Possible to close window from non-parent?

Just like the title asks, is it possible to close a window from one that didn't spawn it?

Here's what I'm doing:
I have a PHP script that constantly refreshes. If something happens with the data that is being refreshed, a popup will appear to alert whoever is watching it. If the situation clears itself, I want the popup to disappear.

I think that if you have the name of the window you should beable to open a link to a page that has js that is close window.
It shouldnt be a problem as long as the domain that opened it is the same one that invoked the page that closed it. (Of course I havent tested this theory lately either)

any window that has been opened via code (window.open) can be also
closed by code if you know its name, which is the second parameter given
to the window.open method.

not sure about domains, might be good idea to test it somehow..
