    Javascript frameworks?

Recently I've seen more and more use of Javascript frameworks such as Mootools and JQuery not to mention dozens of others.

Although I used Mootools for a site I built, the code was already built by someone else. So my major question is, what are these frameworks? How are they structured? How do I know where they need to be changed to create different effects, basically, how the hell do they work and how can I use them?

I've found tons of ready built effects and functions that people offer for us to use, but how could I pick up JQUERY for example and do everything myself without relying on someone else? I've seen the source sites, and I still am not sure how it works.

    Help?

    Thanx

    What are these frameworks?
These javascript frameworks are very useful as they provide a way to make common javascript tasks easier and faster to do. They typicall come with a nice library of pre-built functions (or effects as you mentioned in your post). Finally, they eliminate many of the browser compatibility issues we face when writing javascript code for multiple browsers.

    How are they structured?
I'm not really sure what you mean by this question, but they typically are structured in one or more .js files that are included on the pages you plan to use them on. Then you can use the functions inside to perform your tasks.

How do I know where they need to be changed to create different effects, basically, how the hell do they work and how can I use them?
Really, all you need to do is read the documentation and see what functions are available and what they do. You don't need to change the library, itself. Rather, you use the library to do what you need, based on your own requirements.

How could I pick up JQUERY for example and do everything myself without relying on someone else?
Start by reading the JQuery documentation. Having experience writing JavaScript is always a plus.

    Great jmurrayhead, thanks,

You almost answered all my questions. That way I know how the general structuring works, but I've seen a varied amount of results using "Jquery" for example, and I was wondering if that depends on plugins created for the framework (I'm guessing an added code string or something similar), or if the developer just used something inside the framework?

I'm sorry if I sound totally stupid, but Javascript is the one coding language I've always had a boit of trouble with, don't know why.

Well, what do you mean by "an added code string or something similar"? It could be a combination of things. Firstly, the developer is using the framework because of the items I mentioned in my first post. Secondly, he may or may not use the plugins. Perhaps he's using his own code. It really depends on the requirement and if existing tools are provided to meet that requirement, or if the developer wants to create his own.

That's what I was afraid of, actually having to use my own brain :P I guess that all those incredible developers out there who have been putting together incredible codes and offering them to us are going to have to keep bailing me out.

I guess that's what I get for mixing Webdesign with coding all in one head... mine in case it wasn't obvious

Thanx again, you've really lifted the curtains for me on this. Now I gotta do some research
