We have several IMAP accounts setup with 1and1 for shared email accounts and users have recently started having problems where the password box would constantly popup.

Outlook would also give an error of:-
too many errors.
Protocol: IMAP
Server: imap.1and1.co.uk
Port: 143
Error Code: 0x800CCCDD"

Obviously this was causing lots of problems for users with several IMAP accounts.

The solution I found was to remove all these IMAP accounts from the Send / Receive group and only have POP accounts set to Send / Receive.

It seems IMAP keeps the connection open between Outlook and the server and therefore it is not necessary to keep Send / Receive. It also makes Send/Receive run much quicker, as previously it appeared to be syncing all folders for all IMAP accounts, which was taking forever. Now, new messages automatically appear in the IMAP inbox without any need to Send / Receive.

This may only be relevant for host 1and1, but this seems to have resolved the issue for us.
