    Hashing (Encryption) Password & Other Sensitive Information

    Whenever you store passwords, credit card information, or other valuable personal, private information in a database, you should almost always get into the habit of encrypting your data. MD5 is an excellenct hashing tool developed to do just that. To hash/encrypt your string, simply use the following:

    Code:
    strMyText = "MyPassword"
    strEncrypted = MD5(strMyText)

    You will want to create an include file and store this in your include file. This is the actual script that hashes your string:

    Code:
    <%
    ' Derived from the RSA Data Security, Inc. MD5 Message-Digest Algorithm,
    ' as set out in the memo RFC1321.
    '
    '
    ' ASP VBScript code for generating an MD5 'digest' or 'signature' of a string. The
    ' MD5 algorithm is one of the industry standard methods for generating digital
    ' signatures. It is generically known as a digest, digital signature, one-way
    ' encryption, hash or checksum algorithm. A common use for MD5 is for password
    ' encryption as it is one-way in nature, that does not mean that your passwords
    ' are not free from a dictionary attack.

    1) Hashing and encryption are two very different processes.
    Hashing = one way process. The hash cannot be returned to it's original value, it can only be compared to another hashed value.

    Encryption = two way process. Something that is encrypted can be decrypted and returned to its original value.

    2) My assumption, based on your response, is that you want to write/create your own hash or encryption algorithm? My answer to this, if this is truly your question, is NO. It's it much more secure to use an established hash or encryption algorithm, than it is to try and create your own.
